NikitaThukral was born into a Punjabi family and she was grownup in Mumbai Maharashtra. She completed her Masters degree in Economics from Kishinchand Chellaram College.She was spotted by producer D. Ramanaidu while she was dining in a hotel in Juhu Mumbai and he offered her a role in his film Hai. This was the first debut film of he in Telgu,After appearing in Hai, Thukral starred opposite Fahad Fazil who was then known as Shanu in his film debut Kaiyethum Doorath. The Malayalam film was not success on the box office, but she was again come back and find additional roles in Tamil and Telugu films like Kurumbu and Sambaram. After that Nikita entered in Kannada cinema with S S Niwas's Maharaja and again Nikita Thukral returned to act in a Tamil film and worked in Venkat Prabhu's multistarrer Saroja with Kajal Agarwal as Kalyani, the muse of a gangster portrayed by Sampath Raj, and she won critical appraise for her performance in this movie. Her appearance in the song "Kodana Kodi" was appreciated as the song of the year and became very popular in south india, and her role in the film get to her winning the ITFA Best Supporting Actress Award. The success this film she sign in to appear in a big film production, Gautham Menon's  Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikaalam in a role with Trisha Krishnan.

In 2008, Nikita thukra shifted herself in Telugu to Kannada cinema, going on to co-star with leading actors Upendra, Puneet Rajkumar, V. Ravichandran and Darshan for prince. After Prince, she signed on to be part of several films including Cottonpet, Priyasakha opposite Ramesh Aravind and a Telugu film named Apartment, but none of them saw a theatrical release. After that her next releases were the Tamil thriller film Muran in this movie she played charector of Indhu, with actors Cheran and Prasanna, and a historical film, Kranthiveera Sangolli Rayanna. In 2013 Tamil masala film Alex Pandian was the big hit on the box office and the film was only film of her which was release in 2013. In 2014 she was seen in three Kannada films, although two of them, Namaste Madam and Namo Bhootatma, as in her cameo roles only. Her future release films include the crime drama Ring Road Shubha, reportedly the first Kannada film to be made by an all-women crew, the horror flick Avunu 2 in Telugu as well as the anthological drama Traffic that would mark her Hindi debut.

Nikita Thukral has also done modelling work with acting for designer Roopa Vohra. She also participated in the first season of the reality show Bigg Boss Kannada, the Kannada version of Bigg Boss. She completed 99 days in the Bigg Boss Home and she was the second runner-up of the show.
